Diana Thater
iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa

Project Summary

Diana Thater visited iSimangaliso Wetland Park in January 2007. Experienced in capturing footage of animals in the wild, Thater located and filmed many of the park’s endangered and threatened species, including rhinoceros, hippopotamuses, giraffes, elephants, crocodiles, warthogs, and several species of birds. Long concerned with human mitigation of the relationship between animals and their natural habitats, Thater has created a gallery installation for Human/Nature that will feature a multi-channel wall of footage from her filming.

“Art changes the world by changing the way you see. People can change the world through conservation, but we have to realize that the way the world is depicted also changes the world. That’s what’s interesting about this project. There is a certain percentage of people who will say, ‘Ah! That’s beautiful! What is that?’ And you can change the world that way.”
